The Maine Public Broadcasting Network has an exciting opportunity for the right individual to produce and host our daily flagship statewide morning classical music program, serve as MPBN’s ambassador to the state’s vibrant and rich arts community, and be an integral player in helping MPBN to secure support for and launch a new classical music service!

Sharing and interacting daily with music listeners all around our state and beyond, with a goal of building audience value and support for MPBN’s classical music efforts, the person selected for this position will be a friendly, personable morning companion who is depended on by our audience to share the best in classical music, from old favorites to new selections, new performances, unknown works and unknown composers. The successful candidate must be enjoyable, interesting, inspiring and connected, keeping in close touch with what is new and exciting in Maine’s active performing arts community, and able to share all of that as an enthusiastic and compelling component of MPBN’s service that keeps it relevant, vital and unique.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Director of Music & Performance

DESCRIPTION: The MPBN Director of Music & Performance serves as the dynamic voice of MPBN Radio’s commitment to classical music, as well as other music programming, providing loyal MPBN listeners with a relevant and valued classical music listening experience that provides an engaging connection to our state’s rich cultural life.

The Director of Music & Performance is responsible for the daily planning and hosting of our important weekday morning classical music program in a warm, personable and engaging style, choosing and presenting music that will attract, delight and inspire our listening audience.

Through genuine curiosity and passion, the host will bring to listeners in our region and on-line an awareness, understanding and appreciation for Maine’s many cultural performance events. The Director of Music & Performance will propose, make recommendations, assist with and oversee, as appropriate and assigned, other MPBN classical, performance and music programming.

The Director of Music & Performance will serve as MPBN’s primary ambassador to Maine’s arts community and maintain ongoing contact with the public and those in the performing arts community throughout the MPBN listening area, including via social media, while continually striving to advance a greater appreciation for and listening to classical music and MPBN. The Director of Music & Performance will establish and maintain contacts and coordinate local arts performances for broadcast on MPBN’s Maine Stage performance program.

Working closely with the Vice President for Radio and the MPBN President & CEO, the Director of Music & Performance will serve in an integral and public role to help develop and execute MPBN’s strategic vision to launch a new classical network, including engaging in extensive development and fundraising efforts to help MPBN realize this objective.

Considerable travel, private meetings and public speaking opportunities are expected. The Director of Music & Performance will be responsible for managing maintenance and growth of the MPBN music library, and for special projects as assigned. In addition, the Director of Music & Performance will supervise appropriate radio staff and will contribute, as appropriate, to overseeing MPBN operations and ensuring an enriching and fulfilling staff experience.


  • Program, produce and host daily weekday morning classical music program designed to grow and strengthen audience and appreciation for classical music, and provide a valued listener connection to Maine’s performing arts community.
  • Work closely with management to design, shape and implement new MPBN classical network; improve, maintain and grow as appropriate following launch.
  • Frequently assist with Development Department fundraising efforts for classical music network launch and subsequent maintenance and growth.
  • Engage in frequent/constant contact and interaction with the public and those involved in the performing arts community, with frequent travel, meetings and public appearances.
  • Serve as an integral member of the MPBN management team in a leadership role, fill in for the Vice President of Radio and other MPBN management as appropriate and assigned.
  • Serve as a proponent for and manage the development and execution of MPBN’s radio classical and performance programs, and maintain high quality standards in local classical – and other - music productions for the highest audience impact and satisfaction.
  • Serve as a proponent for and maintain an active social media presence to further promote MPBN classical programming, organizational messaging and the arts in Maine.
  • Assist with and/or work to ensure MPBN’s music and classical commitment is represented in a timely and relevant manner through MPBN’s digital efforts and presence.
  • Serve as Executive Producer of MPBN Radio’s weekly Maine Stage program, providing a diverse offering of fresh recordings of Maine ensemble performances.
  • Assist with programming/production/hosting/operations/news activities as appropriate or assigned including MPBN (and other) events, remote recording activities, and fundraising.
  • Special projects or productions as assigned.
  • Manage the maintenance and growth of the MPBN music library, including organization, music company relations, staff procedures and volunteers.
  • Develop and supervise assigned staff, and provide ongoing staff feedback, consultations and evaluations. Assist with and coordinates training of new employees and others.
  • Manage assigned budgets.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree (Master’s preferred) and at least five years of public broadcasting experience required, including at least three years of classical music program production/hosting experience.
  • Three years management experience required.
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for public broadcasting classical music audience-building techniques essential. Strong familiarity with classical music as well as its history and repertoire, and solid foreign language pronunciation skills required.
  • A proven conversational, warm and engaging on-air presence essential.
  • Attention to detail and good organizational, communication (including public speaking) and computer skills required.
  • Experience with social media interaction, along with multimedia performance, remote recordings and diverse platform production techniques preferred.
  • Knowledge of Jazz and AAA formats, experience with live interviews and performances extremely helpful.
  • Outgoing personality and someone who genuinely enjoys constant interaction with the public and members of the performing arts community, networking, fundraising and public appearances strongly preferred.
