Director of Digital Media

This position builds and manages strategies and procedures, as well as staff and budgets, for digital media systems that support MPBN’s new strategic plan, enhance content delivery on all platforms, allowing MPBN to reach more users, build a strong organization and have a positive impact on the communities we serve.

This position is expected to move MPBN to a “digital first” culture through appropriate establishment of priorities, development of systems and management of staff workflow. Responsibilities include developing strategy for new and existing content delivery on all digital platforms, designing and implementing digital products and applications, administering digital technology and systems staff, enhancing web/mobile analytics, and engaging the audience, with a focus on enhancing revenue growth opportunities.


  • Develop a vision and strategy for all digital media across MPBN’s broadcast and audience service area.
  • Create editorial, journalistic and programming goals for all digital platforms based on strategic and operational plans with NPR and PBS.
  • Oversee implementation of digital technologies and manage assigned staff and budgets, establishing clear goals, evaluating goal achievement and maintaining high standards of performance.
  • Ensure projects are adequately staffed, managed, tested, documented and completed on time.
  • Monitor, review and interpret Web analytics to ensure best practices.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively to accomplish responsibilities, goals and projects.
  • Work with members of other departments within MPBN to ensure their knowledge of and access to digital technologies that will enhance their work product and revenue generation strategies, as well as advance the strategy of MPBN.
  • Set and communicate performance standards that are specific and measurable.
  • Design, set up, coordinate and execute an effective MPBN social media presence.
  • Ensure content remains current, relevant and consistent with MPBN’s quality standards and brand.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, with at least five years’ experience in all facets of digital media, preferably in public broadcasting or similar technology space, such as journalism, higher education or nonprofit organization, required. Advanced degree and / or significant leadership in implementation of programming, editorial or news gathering desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a diverse scope of projects requiring detailed analysis, creative and practical problem solving, and sound judgment based on user experience required.
  • Broad and deep experience in web content authoring and management systems required.
  • Working knowledge of current public media platforms from PBS, NPR and other digital providers in the system strongly preferred.
  • Experience with and understanding of Drupal, CMS, and HTML5 preferred.
  • Proficiency with graphics editing applications, FTP software, MS Office and other common applications required.
  • Strong understanding of, appreciation for and active proponent and user of relevant social media strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of PHP and SVN preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • At least five years’ supervisory experience preferred.
