Chief Development Officer
 

The Chief Development Officer is responsible for all individual, corporate, and foundation fundraising and strategy at MPBN, including annual and capital campaigns.

This includes planning and supervising charitable contributions through membership, major gifts, planned giving, foundations / grants, on-air campaigns for radio and television, direct mail, telemarketing, and special events.

The Chief Development Officer leads the Major Gifts and Membership staffs and manages donor relationships. This position is a member of the Executive team, working in close partnership with the CEO, Chair of the Board of Trustees, leaders of the Board, major donors, and community volunteers to maximize charitable philanthropy for this statewide nonprofit institution. In addition, the Chief Development Officer is personally a superb fundraiser, building relationships, shaping the institutional culture of giving, and leading the cause of advancement for public broadcasting in Maine.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and implements strategies and plans to meet or exceed annual revenue goals including overseeing the Membership / Major Donor renewal and acquisition efforts.
  • Supervises the Membership and Major Gifts teams, which includes goal development, supporting professional development, delivering performance evaluations, providing timely feedback, hiring, and instituting disciplinary steps, if necessary.
  • During specific fundraising Campaigns, assists with feasibility studies, planning and execution of the campaign including the management of the fundraising consultants’ and corresponding expenses, working directly with the Development and campaign committees including establishing the monthly agendas, supervising minutes and updates for the Board of Trustees and reporting on campaign progress.
  • Cultivates and solicits an identified portfolio of major donors through personal visits, events and written communications, working closely with the President and Board of Trustees on any established Campaign Steering Committee. Ensures appropriate value proposition exists for major donors and relationships are carefully stewarded to increase the donor’s lifetime value to MPBN.
  • Directs and oversees the written philanthropic appeal collateral, on air messaging for radio and television fundraising, telemarketing messaging, major donor one on one interactions, and planned giving appeals to ensure consistency in voice and appropriate branding of MPBN.
  • Working with the CFO, develops and maintains revenue and expense budgets for Membership, Major Gifts, foundations, Car Talk donations, and town allocations.
  • Serves as liaison to other departments in communicating area goals, challenges and issues.
  • Works with IT and other departments as well as the outside donor database vendors and customer support teams in achieving results necessary to ensure accurate donor information for effective donor relationship management.
  • Develops and executes the Planned Giving Bequest program and other efforts to build the Endowment, including the management of appropriate bequest appeals, recommended legal language, and execution of annuity plans and review of options with donors.
  • Analyzes and reports on the external fundraising environment and develops and implements best practices of philanthropy by staying current with public media peers, as well as established Maine nonprofits and academic institutions.
  • Manages all relationships with third party fundraising accountability agencies such as Charity Navigator, American Institute of Philanthropy and Better Business Bureaus to ensure MPBN is executing fundraising responsibly.
  • This position coordinates with all departments to meet overall MPBN development goals and objectives in the most efficient and responsive manner.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five to seven years’ experience in a leadership fundraising role for nonprofits or commensurate experience building external relationships required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Enthusiasm for travel and meeting with MPBN donors and event partners required.
  • A valid driver’s license and passport required.
  • Hours for this job vary as necessary for special events and fundraising activities; will include evenings and weekends.
