League Pushes for Action on Climate Change
05/25/2010   Reported By: Susan Sharon

The League of Women Voters is probably best-known for its voter registration efforts and support of openness in government. But in its 90-year history, the non-partisan political organization has also advocated for public policies its members consider critical to improving society -- campaign finance reform, health care and, right now, climate change legislation. League President Mary Wilson was in Maine this week to honor Maine's congressional delegation for its work on clean energy, and she sat down for an interview with Susan Sharon.

With 150,000 members in all 50 states, it might seem like a challenge for the League to reach concensus on hot-button issues like campaign finance, health care and climate change. But League President Mary Wilson says, surprisingly, it's not that difficult. She says members rely on fact gathering and civilized discussion to arrive at their conclusions. And when it comes to what they want to see in climate change legislation, the League has several core principles.

Mary Wilson is an attorney from New Mexico who serves as the national president of the non-partisan League of Women Voters. While the League does not endorse political candidates, it does advocate on behalf of certain issues. Right now, climate change is at the top of its agenda. Wilson says she's hopeful that the oil spill catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico will galvanize Congress to pass climate change legislation this year.
