An earthquake centered in the Candian province of Quebec shook the ground this afternoon in much of northern New England, including Maine. The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 5.0 quake occurred just before 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and was centered in the Ontario-Quebec border region about 33 miles northeast of Ottawa, Ontario.
The quake was felt as far south as Pennsylvania and as far east as Maine, according to U.S. Geological Survey maps. In Maine, people in southern and western parts of the state reported feeling the quake. The federal agency says people in several Maine communities, including Brunswick, Fryeburg, Portland and Augusta, reported feeling the ground shake.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers, according to the Geological Survey's Web site. So far, there are no reports of injuries or damage from the quake.
