Environmentalists Lay out "Trail Map" for State
07/01/2010 12:37 PM ET

The groups outlined their legislative priorities at a news conference today in Portland.

Several Maine environmental organizations have released a so-called "trail map" outlining the steps they feel state lawmakers should take in the next five years to ensure a healthy, prosperous future for Maine people and environment.

The report was produced by the Maine Conservation voters Education Fund. Executive Director Maureen Drouin says Maine is at a crossroads environmentally, economically and politically.

"We're about to usher in a new gubenatorial administration and so we're hoping that this trail map will be used as a tool for candidates running for public office and also policy makers who are currently in office," she says.

Organizers say a common thread running throughout the report is the role a clean environment plays in Maine's economy, which relys heavily on tourism. The report calls for expanding the use of clean energy, keeping toxic chemicals out of the environment and protecting sources of local foods.
