Immigrant advocates are asking Maine's two U.S. senators to intervene on behalf of a Portland resident facing deportation to Guatemala.
Selvin Arevalo, who has lived in Portland for 10 years, was on track to get his high school equivalency diploma when he was involved in a minor fender-bender, which led to charges of driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident.
Arevelo told authorities that he left the scene of the accident because he was an illegal alien. Supporters are planning to hold a telephone news conference tomorrow to urge Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to intervene in Arevelo's deportation proceedings.
They're also urging the senators to support the so-called DREAM Act, an immigration reform measure that would allow some illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. at a young age by their parents and educated in American schools to become permanent residents.
