Poll Shows Mitchell and LePage in Dead Heat
09/29/2010 03:05 PM ET

The poll results are very different from an earlier one conducted September 19, which showed GOP gubernatorial candidate Paul LePage with a comfortable lead over Democratic rival Libby Mitchell.

A new poll shows Democrat Libby Mitchell and Republican Paul LePage in a statistical dead heat in the Maine governor's race. The poll, conducted by the Portland firm Critical Insights was sponsored by MaineToday Media.

The so-called Maine Poll shows Mitchell garnering the support of 30 percent of likely voters, compared with 29 percent for LePage. Those results are very different from a previous Critical Insights' poll released September 19, which showed LePage with 38 percent of the vote and Mitchell with 25 percent.

Among the three Independent candidates, Eliot Cutler came in at 9 percent and Shawn Moody at 5 percent, while Kevin Scott's support dropped to 0 percent.

But the poll revealed an increase in the percentage of voters who are undecided to 26 percent, compared with the September 19 poll which found 21 percent undecided.

The poll surveyed 405 registered Maine voters who said they were likely to vote in November.  It was conducted on Monday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percent.
