| The order comes in the wake of the deadly shooting in Arizona. |

Maine state Senate President Kevin Raye, of Perry, and House Speaker Robert Nutting, of Oakland, have ordered a review of security at the State House in the wake of the shooting in Arizona that killed six, including a federal judge, and seriously wounded Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
Raye says there have been discussions this week with legislative officials and the Capitol Police over security provisions at the State House.
"I frankly think that it would be irresponsible not to take a good hard look at the security measures that we employ at the State House and for members of the Legislature and members of the public who come into this building on a daily basis--they have a right to expect that they will be safe," Raye says.
Nutting says he was surprised to find that the Legislature has a number of screening devices, like magnetometers and x-ray machines, in storage that were acquired years ago through a federal grant. He says there has to be a balance between making the State House safe, and the public's access to their government. |
