Maine Moose Calf Befriended on Facebook Dies
01/21/2011 3:20 PM ET

"South Branch Suzie" died yesterday of what state officials say was a lungworm infection.

A moose calf orphaned in Maine that had her own Facebook page with hundreds of "friends" died yesterday, state wildlife officials say.

The young moose, born last summer, was dubbed "South Branch Suzie" by Saddleback Mountain ski resort visitors who would often see her in the area known as South Branch.  South Branch Suzie had her own Facebook page with more than 1,070 friends.

State wildlife officials say preliminary tests indicate that the calf died of an infection of lungworm, a parasite that is occasionally found in young moose.

In December, the moose had been taken to a wildlife rehab facility in an effort to help her get through the winter and to prepare her to enter the wild.  Officials say the moose was thin when she was captured and probably entered the winter in poor condition.

After the moose died, it was taken to Bangor for a necropsy, which revealed a high infection rate of lungworm.
