Maine's Congressional Delegates Embrace Bipartisan Seating
01/24/2011 02:38 PM ET

Three of Maine's four members of Congress have announced plans to sit with members of the opposite party during the president's State of the Union address tomorrow night.

Members of Maine's congressional delegation are planning to go along with calls to break with the tradition of sitting in partisan blocks during the president's annual State of the Union address.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins says she plans to sit with fellow Sens. Maria Cantwell of Washington and Mark Pryor of Arkansas, both Democrats at the event tomorrow night. Sen. Olympia Snowe says her seatmate will be will Louisiana Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu.

Maine 1st District Rep. Chellie Pingree is taking a different approach: Pingree says she plans to sit with members of the congressional women's softball team, made up of Democrats and Republicans in both the House and Senate. Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, injured in the recent Tucson shootings, is a member of the team, Pingree says.

"Party politics don't get in the way on the softball field and shouldn't come between us during the President's address," Pingree says in a statement.

No word yet on Maine 2nd District Rep. Mike Michaud's seating plans for the event, scheduled for tomorrow evening.

The call for bipartisan seating for the State of the Union address comes in the wake of the Tucson shootings. Though it's largely symbolic, supporters say they hope it will help create a more civil tone in Washington.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address tomorrow evening at 9 p.m.  MPBN Radio, TV and mpbn.net will feature the address live, in its entirety, with coverage on radio from NPR News and the PBS NewsHour on TV as well as mpbn.net.
