02/17/2011 03:55 PM ET

The event is part of the state's effort to promote the popular sport, which generates $300 million a year for the state's economy.

Maine fishing enthusiasts, get out your poles. Fishing on Maine waterways is free this weekend, as part of the state's effort to promote the popular sport.

"Free Fishing Days is a unique way for parents or adults to experience the joys of fishing with their children or friends. No license is required this weekend," says Acting Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Joel Wilkinson, in a statement. "Giving kids a chance to fish may hook them on this sport for a lifetime."

The event is open to anyone except those whose license has been revoked or suspended. All fishing regulations apply. A complete list of regulations can be found on the Web by visiting www.mefishwildlife.com and clicking on "fishing."

State officials say about 286,000 people buy fishing licences in Maine each year, and the sport contributes about $300 million annually to the state's economy.
