A Canadian man is under arrest after threatening to blow up a Cyr bus headed from Bangor to Houlton. Authorities say the incident occurred last night when Thomas Maccabee, 50, displayed what appeared to be a detonator with wires connected to it and asked to be taken to the Canadian border.
Seven passengers were aboard the bus. Maccabee, whose last known address was in Wisconsin, told officials he planned to force the bus to the Houlton Port of Entry, where he intended to demand asylum at the Israeli consulate in Ottawa.
The bus driver stopped the vehicle in Houlton, where the passengers and drivers got off. After a nine-hour standoff, Maccebee surrendered to authorities early this morning. The device he was carrying turned out to be made up of video game parts, duct tape and a spiral bound notebook.
Maccabee has been charged with assault, aggravated reckless conduct and terrorizing.
