King, Obama Win in Maine
11/06/2012 08:12 PM ET

The Associated Press is projecting former Maine Gov. Angus King the winner of Maine's U.S. Senate race, and a win in Maine for President Obama.

Moments after the polls closed at 8:00 p.m. The Associated Press is projecting former Maine Gov. Angus King the winner of the race for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Olympia Snowe.

The AP is also projecting a win for President Obama in the Pine Tree State, though Gov. Mitt Romney still hopes to capture one electoral vote in the state's more closely-contested 2nd District.

King was challenged by Republican Charlie Summers and Democrat Cynthia Dill, as well as three other independent candidates.

As an independent, King has refused to divulge which party he will caucus with in the Senate, though many analysts predict he will caucus with Democrats. Democrats now control the Senate 53 - 47.
