STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine (AP) _ The blue swastikas were painted on the front door of Stockton Springs Community Church and on both sides of two signs on the church's lawn either late Monday or early Tuesday.
Maine voters on Tuesday approved a ballot question legalizing gay marriage in the state.
Protect Marriage Maine, an organization opposed to the legalization of gay marriage, issued a statement on behalf of pastor Steve DeGroft that said the church has "taken a loving and respectful stand for traditional marriage" and the vandalism was an attempt to "silence and intimidate."
The Waldo County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
