ALTON, Maine (AP) _ Maine State Police say the deaths of a man, his estranged wife and his friend were a murder-double suicide, and that the husband underwent a mental health evaluation two days before the violence occurred.
Authorities previously said 43-year-old Scott Reed stabbed his 39-year-old wife, Danielle, then shot himself. Their bodies were found in their Alton home on Nov. 19, along with that of 41-year-old Daniel Young of Bradley.
State police spokesman Stephen McCausland told the Bangor Daily News (http://bit.ly/RuOtHM) on Sunday that investigators have determined Young shot himself. He says Young and Scott Reed had made a suicide pact.
McCausland says Reed was sent to a hospital for the mental health evaluation on Nov. 17 after damaging his wife's car and telling police he was suicidal. But he was released later that day.
