Dustin Phillip Smith was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to charges including terrorizing and interference with law enforcement dogs.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — An Augusta man who stabbed a police dog during a chase, then holed up in a Randolph apartment for several hours, has been sentenced to two years in jail and ordered to pay for the dog's surgery.

Dustin Phillip Smith was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to charges including terrorizing and interference with law enforcement dogs.

Police chased the 20-year-old Smith on Oct. 10 because he was suspected of stealing prescription drugs. He stabbed the German shepherd named Draco behind the ear during the pursuit before barricading himself in an apartment at Windsor Heights.

In addition to his jail time, he was ordered to pay $400 for Draco's injury, a deep wound that required stitches and staples.

Police tell the Kennebec Journal that Draco is back on duty.
