AARP Poll: Members Support Health Care Reform Provisions
12/11/2009 12:25 PM ET

The poll, conducted in late October and early November, found strong support for several provisions of the Affordable Health Care for America Act passed by the U.S. House.

A new poll finds that Maine AARP members support elements of the health care reform bill passed by the U.S. House. Nancy Kelleher, state director of the seniors' lobby says the poll was prompted by the flood of negative ads about the package.

"We were just curious in Maine, how Maine people felt about it, and basically, overall our members in Maine said they supported the legislation by three to one, so we think that's great," Kelleher says.

The poll found that 82 percent support a provision requiring insurance companies to cover routine checkups and preventative care, and 78 percent of AARP members approve of allowing Medicare to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for lower prescription drug prices.

The survey of 427 AARP members in Maine was conducted between October 30 and November 8. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.7 percent.
