Fire officials are evacuating some Portland residents at this hour after an explosion and ammonia leak at a local storage company.
Officials say a small explosion at Americold Logistics in Portland today was followed by a leak of ammonia gas. No injuries have been reported, but Portland fire officials say residents living near the company are being evacuated as a safety precaution until the leak can be contained and the building properly ventilated.
Firefighters and police officers will be going door-to-door to evacuate residents on several streets, including Read Street, Gleckler Street, Wellington Road, Carlyle Road and Glengarden Street. METRO buses are on site to provide immediate shelter.
School buses that normally deliver students to those streets have been ordered to return the students to school, where parents can pick them up.
