| Lawmakers are eyeing ways to increase gambling revenue, but the governor says he'll veto any bill that expands gambling unless it's approved by voters in a statewide referendum. |

Key Maine lawmakers are considering expanding gambling to bring in more state revenue, as Hollywood slots, the Bangor racino, pushes for approval to add table games, such as poker and craps. But Gov. John Baldacci says he'll veto any such legislation, unless voters approve of the expansion in a statewide referendum.
"What you have now in Bangor was voted on by the people of Bangor and was voted on by the people of Maine," Baldacci told Capitol News Service. "The percentages, all of this, was part of a referendum. Any changes to the way that it operates, especially in this particular area, need to be approved by the people."
Baldacci says he personally opposes new gambling facilities, such as the proposed Oxford County casino, but he says the petition effort that initiated that legislation is the right way to go.
