Report: More Mainers Will Die Early Without Health Reform
03/05/2010 12:45 PM ET

That's according to a new report by Families USA.

If the U.S. fails to enact health care reform this year, 900 Maine residents will die prematurely over the next decade. That's according to Families USA, which advocates for health care reform.

In a report released today, the group says that nationally, the number of premature deaths due to lack of coverage is expected to grow from 68 a day this year to 84 a day in 2019 among those between the ages of 25 and 64.

On a conference call with reporters this morning, Families USA Executive Director Ron Pollack said the uninsured often defer getting medical attention until it's too late.

He said if health reform fails, hundreds of thousands of people nationwide "will die needlessly and prematurely over the next decade because our terribly flawed health care system excludes these ordinary Americans."
