Obama Declares Parts of Maine Disaster Areas
07/30/2009 6:25PM EST

President Obama today declared parts of Maine to be a federal disaster area.

In response to a request from Maine's congressional delegation, Obama ordered Federal aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by severe storms, flooding, and landslides earlier in the summer.

The affected areas are in Franklin, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Oxford, Somerset, Waldo, and Washington counties.

In a joint statement, Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, along with Congressman Mike Michaud and Congresswoman Chellie Pingee welcomed the president's annonucemet, saying the storms had caused "dangerous conditions and significant hardship in Maine."
