Catholic Church in Lewiston Shuts its Doors For Good
10/13/2009 12:21 PM ET

St. Joseph's church is one of several in Lewiston and the Biddeford-Saco area slated to close, as expenses rise and parisioners decline.

Another sign of changing times in the Catholic church:  A Lewiston church that's been serving parishioners for nearly 150 years will shut its doors today.

Bishop Richard Malone will officiate over the final Mass today at St. Joseph's church, which was built over a three year period beginning in 1864, according to the Associated Press.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland says plans are underway to close five churchs in Lewiston and the Biddeford-Saco area by the end of next year.  The Diocese says the churches are too expensive to operate and maintain in the face of a decline in parishioners.

St. Joseph's is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is known for its columned nave and hand-painted stained glass and murals, the Associated Press reports.

The closures will leave three Catholic Church buildings open in Lewiston, and three in Biddeford-Saco, Diocese officials say.
