Friendship Ends Status as Dry Town
11/04/2009 04:15 PM ET

Voters in the midcoast town have voted three times in the past to remain dry, but last night that string was broken.

The only market in Friendship will now be allowed to sell beer and wine six days a week. Yesterday, voters in the midcoast town narrowly approved a measure that ends the town's status as a dry community.

Friendship has voted to remain a dry town three times in the past 22 years, according to WCSH-TV in Portland, but yesterday, that string was broken. That means that the town's only grocery store, Wallace's Market, can now sell some alcoholic beverages.

Owner Ernie Colletti told the TV station he was worried he might go out of business because residents were buying booze in neighboring Waldoboro, and stocking up on other items while they were there.

He says the market can't sell alcohol right away -- it will need a state beer and wine license first.
