Maine AG Warns of 'Legal Action' Scam
12/28/2012 04:26 PM ET

Schneider says several consumers in Maine have reported receiving calls telling them they'll face a lawsuit if they don't resolve the phony legal action by making another call.

Maine Attorney General William Schneider is warning consumers to beware of calls claiming that they've been named in a legal action.

Schneider says several consumers in Maine have reported receiving calls telling them they'll face a lawsuit if they don't resolve the phony legal action by making another call. Recipients of the calls describe them as threatening, Schneider says.

"If you receive a call claiming that you are being sued, named in a legal action or subpoenaed, hang up immediately," Schneider advises in a press release. "Do not call any numbers provided by the caller. Calling the number will only result in more scam calls."

Schneider says consumers who are able to identify the incoming call number should report it to their telephone service provider. He's asking anyone who has already been targeted by the scam to call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline, at 207-626-8849.
