Maine Honors Martin Luther King, Jr., as Obama Inaugurated
01/21/2013 02:44 PM ET

About 600 people gathered at the Holiday Inn by the Bay this morning for the annual Martin Luther King Breakfast.

The nation is honoring civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. today - the same day it marks the inauguration of President Barack Obama to his second term.

This morning in Portland, about 600 people gathered at the Holiday Inn by the Bay for the annual Martin Luther King Breakfast. Foreshadowing President Obama's inauguaral address, the theme of this year's breakfast was "We the People."

"So it's we the people - right? - forming a more perfect union," Portland NAACP President Rachel Talbot Ross told the crowd. "We want these words not to just seem sentimental for a period of time in history that's totally disconnected from our lives, but essential to living our lives."

Today's event concluded with a live-stream of President Obama's inauguration.
