Maine AG Warns of Medicare Scam
01/22/2013 11:19 AM ET

Maine Attorney General Janet Mills says the scammers are targeting Medicare recipients in an effort to get personal banking information.

Maine's attorney general is warning of a scam that targets Medicare recipients. Janet Mills says the scammers are calling Medicare recipients claiming that they're issuing new Medicare cards. They ask for the recipients' Medicare numbers, and information about their bank accounts.

"Mainers can protect themselves by never giving any personal information to anyone over the phone," Mills says in a statement.

Mills says Medicare consumers who have received such calls should review their Medicare statements carefully and report any questionable items to 1-800-MEDICARE. She says those who have given out banking information should also notify their financial institution.

Mills is advising those who think they might have received such calls to contact the attorney general's Cunsumer Protection Hotline at 207-626-8849.
