They may look curious to the uninitiated, but "roundabouts" are being increasingly touted as the way forward when it comes to dealing with traffic flow. In case you haven't seen one, a roundabout is an island at a road junction, a circular one-way intersection that flows around a central island and means fewer traffic lights. University of Maine Civil Engineering Professor Per Erik Garder has recently completed a two-year study, commissioned by the New England University Transportation Center, analyzing the design and the navigability of roundabouts looking at drivers of all ages.
