UPDATE: Underage Drinking Trial Begins in Maine
02/04/2013 03:41 PM ET

Barry and Paula Spencer went on trial today on nine misdemeanor counts of allowing minors to possess or consume liquor at a party last June.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Defense attorneys say a Maine husband and wife did all they could to stop teenagers from drinking at a party at their Falmouth home, but Cumberland County's top prosecutor says they knew there was underage drinking and failed to stop it.

Barry and Paula Spencer went on trial Monday on nine misdemeanor counts of allowing minors to possess or consume liquor at a party last June.

The Portland Press Herald reported that a defense attorney told jurors that Barry Spencer stopped teens who arrived, searched their bags and dumped out any alcohol he found, but that the party spiraled out of control as uninvited teenagers sneaked onto the property with alcohol.

District Attorney Stephanie Anderson said the couple was aware of the drinking and allowed it to continue.
