PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing the mother of his four children in front of their 7-year-old son, as well as a longtime friend of his in Maine.

Joel Hayden of New Bedford was convicted last month of two counts of murder in the July 25, 2011, deaths of his estranged girlfriend, Renee Sandora of New Gloucester, and his friend, Trevor Mills of New Bedford.

He was sentenced Tuesday in Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland.

During Hayden's trial, his son, now 8, testified that he saw his father gun down his mother outside her home in New Gloucester.

Prosecutors said the 31-year-old Hayden killed Sandora and Mills because he thought they were having an affair.
