UNE Program Aimed at Boosting Immigrant Health Care
02/12/2013 04:41 PM ET

The University of New England is heading a new federally-funded program aimed at preparing future health professionals to serve immigrants, refugees and other underserved populations.

UNE is collaborating on the program with the Portland Community Health Center, the city of Portland and other community partners. The school will offer courses in cross-cultural awareness, community health systems, and immigrant and refugee health.

"Their physical health needs are great, their emotional health needs are great, and they're coming to a brand new culture and assimilating into that culture," says Portland Community Health Center CEO Leslie Clark Brancato.

Portland Community Health Center will provide a clinical site for students to rotate through. The program will provide nurses and other current health care practitioners with training in leadership, community engagement and collaboration, and provide training for additional community health outreach workers.
