Iceland-based container shipping company Eimskip says it will move its base of operations from Norfolk, Virginia, to Portland, Maine.

Eimskip General Manager Larus Isfeld told reporters this morning that Portland is a good fit for the company's North Atlantic shipping trade.

"It's Portland's rich history as a seafood hub and the cultural similarities between the population to the current markets we have in northern Europe," Isfeld said. "And the fact that no other steamship line is servicing the area - that's what makes Portland a unique opportunity for us."

Local and state officials say Eimskip's relocation will also offer Maine shippers a more cost-effective way to export or import product to northern Europe.

Eimskip will use the International Marine Terminal, which the Maine Port Authority recently renovated to attract more container shipping. In addition, Pan Am Railways says it may rebuild a spur track into the terminal to handle cargo from the container ship heading to or from other points in the U.S.
