Senate Confirms Maine Lawyer to 1st Circuit
02/13/2013 03:42 PM ET

President Barack Obama originally nominated William Kayatta of Cape Elizabeth early last year, but his Senate confirmation was stalled by election-year politics.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ The U.S. Senate has voted 88-12 to confirm a Maine lawyer's appointment to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston more than a year after his nomination by the president.

President Barack Obama originally nominated William Kayatta of Cape Elizabeth early last year, but his Senate confirmation was stalled by election-year politics despite an endorsement from the Senate Judiciary Committee. Obama renominated Kayatta for the post last month.

Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King of Maine had predicted Kayatta would easily win Senate approval in a floor vote, which happened Wednesday afternoon.

Kayatta, a partner at Pierce Atwood in Portland, will replace Judge Kermit Lipez of Maine, who had been on the court since 1998.
