Feds Announce Intent on Fish Monitoring Costs
03/01/2013 02:11 PM ET

Federal fishery managers are telling struggling New England fishermen that they'll cover as much of the costs of required independent catch monitors as possible.

BOSTON (AP) _ Regional fishermen who target bottom-dwelling groundfish are facing devastating cuts in what they're allowed to catch in 2013.

The cuts come in a year the fleet is supposed to absorb the cost of at-sea monitors for the first time.

Many fishermen have said with their radical declines in catch, it's impossible to cover the at-sea monitoring costs, estimated at about $6.7 million for the fleet.

In an announcement Friday, federal regulators said they can't definitively commit to pay for the monitors, because of automatic spending cuts that kicked in Friday and the lack of a federal budget for the 2013 fiscal year.
