Garrett Brewer's father says police told him his son went into insulin shock and died in his cell.

WINDHAM, Maine (AP) _ The father of an inmate who died in the Maine Correctional Center in Windham is raising questions about his diabetic son's care behind bars.

The Department of Corrections says 35-year-old Garrett Brewer died Wednesday at about 1:30 p.m. The death is under review, but authorities have not released details.

Brewer's father, Thomas Brewer of Presque Isle, tells The Portland Press Herald that police told him his son went into insulin shock and died in his cell.

His recommended treatment consisted of three daily insulin injections and extensive exercise.

The older Brewer said his son sent him letters saying the prison's medical staff had changed his medication dosages and limited his exercise.

The younger Brewer had served about 66 days of a nine-month drug trafficking sentence.
