04/04/2013 09:54 AM ET

Horace Barstow did not enter a plea on Wednesday to three counts of unlawful sexual contact at an appearance in Skowhegan District Court.

SKOWHEGAN, Maine (AP) _ A Norridgewock man charged with sexually abusing three children at his wife's now-closed day care center has been released on $20,000 bail after his first court appearance.

Horace Barstow did not enter a plea on Wednesday to three counts of unlawful sexual contact at an appearance in Skowhegan District Court.

The Morning Sentinel reports that the 67-year-old Barstow did not say anything except to tell the judge he understood his bail conditions, which include no contact with girls under age 16.

According to court records, the alleged unlawful contact took place between Nov. 1 and Dec. 7 at ABC 123 Daycare, which was owned and operated by Barstow's wife, Barbara, at their home.

A state Department of Health and Human Services spokesman says the facility has since closed permanently.
