Maine Man Charged with Arson in Augusta Fire

Authorities say Stephen Cormier, 57, was charged today with setting the fire that destroyed a Northern Avenue apartment building containing four apartments.

Firefighters battle the blaze at 146 Northern Avenue in Augusta back in March.

An former Augusta resident has been charged with arson in connection with a fire that destroyed the apartment building he lived in.

State Public Safety Department officials say Stephen Cormier, 57, was charged today with setting fire to his living room couch March 21 in his first-floor apartment of the building, located at 146 Northern Avenue.

Cormier was treated for smoke inhalation after the fire. The blaze destroyed the building, which contained four apartments. The structure has since been torn down.

Officials say Cormer was taken into custody today around noon at a homeless shelter he's been staying at in Waterville. He was taken to the Kennebec County Jail.
