General Dynamics to Lay off 110 at Saco Plant
04/11/2013 12:32 PM ET

The cuts are the result of a reduction in demand for the heavy machine guns made at the facility, as military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq wind down, The Portland Press Herald reports.

General Dynamics says it's planning to lay off 110 workers at its Saco weapons manufacturing plant. That's about one-third of the workforce, according to The Portland Press Herald.

The reason for the job cuts is a reduction in demand for the heavy machine guns made at the facility, as military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq wind down.

The company says the workers, who are all involved in producing heavy machine guns and auto-grenade launchers, will be laid off between June 14 and July 1, according to the paper. An additional 15 people will be offered voluntary severance packages.

The cuts will affect both salaried and hourly workers. When the cuts are complete, about 215 workers will remain at the plant, the paper reports.
