04/12/2013 10:31 AM ET

Ioannis Zagklaras was injured in October 2008, and died several months later, after becoming pinned between a ship and a cable reel on the dock while helping to unload cargo.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ The widow of a Greek port captain who died months after he was severely injured in an accident in Portland has settled her lawsuit against the port operator and a shipping firm.

Eirini Zagklaras sued Sprague Energy Corp. and Leopard Shipping Co. for wrongful death. Her husband, Ioannis Zagklaras, was injured in October 2008 when he got pinned between the ship and a cable reel on the dock while helping to unload cargo.

He underwent 22 surgeries and died at a Maine hospital in March 2009.

The Portland Press Herald reports the trial began this week in federal court, but halted Wednesday after lawyers told the judge they had reached a settlement.

Details weren't disclosed. Eirini Zagklaras had sought more than $1.2 million for medical expenses and unspecified punitive damages.
