Maine Panel Acts on East-West Highway Bills
05/07/2013 5:05 PM ET

A Maine legislative committee has voted on several bills aimed at stalling or killing the proposed east-west highway, virtually assuring their final fate in the House and Senate.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The Transportation Committee voted Tuesday in favor of a bill calling for more transparency in public-private transportation projects, and to repeal the requirement for a feasibility study on the proposed $2 billion project. The proposal calls for a 220-mile, privately run toll road connecting New Brunswick and Quebec via Maine.

The panel voted to kill bills which would bar the use of public money for a private entity's highway plan, and require an independent analysis of an east-west highway.

Opponents of the highway say it would siphon business from existing roads, while supporters say it would open Maine businesses to new markets.
