Maine Groups Launch Campaign for Universal Health Care
05/09/2013 12:09 PM ET

The groups, including the Maine People's Alliance, say many people still do not have access to adequate health care.

A consortium of Maine advocacy groups today unveiled a campaign to push for universal health insurance coverage. It's called the "Healthcare is a Human Right Campaign."

Jennie Pirkl, of the Maine People's Alliance, spoke on behalf of the coalition at a Portland news conference. "While health care has been getting a lot of attention in recent years, and steps have been made to improve the situation, it is not enough," Pirkl said. "Our right to the care we need to live full and healthy lives is still being denied."

The groups did not specify a method for getting to universal insurance coverage. But they said an adequate plan should be based on five principles: universality, fair financing, accountability, transparency and participation.

Joining the Maine People's Alliance in the campaign are the Maine State Nurses Association, AllCare, and the Maine AFL-CIO.
