Maine Wind Turbine Fire Under Investigation
05/13/2013 01:04 PM ET

TransCanada spokesman Grady Semmens says the January fire burned out the gear box at the top of one of the 44 turbines at the Kibby Wind farm in western Maine.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ An investigation into the cause of a fire that destroyed a wind turbine at New England's largest wind farm is expected to wrap up within a month. The Jan. 16 blaze was the first reported turbine fire in Maine.

TransCanada spokesman Grady Semmens says the fire burned out the gear box at the top of one of the 44 turbines at the Kibby Wind farm in western Maine. No one was injured and the fire didn't spread to surrounding forestland.

TransCanada, an independent fire investigator and the turbine manufacturer are conducting the investigation. A full inspection of the turbine was delayed because of snow and poor road conditions leading to the remote tower.

Such fires are uncommon but have been reported elsewhere. TransCanada hasn't decided whether to replace the turbine.
