05/17/2013 10:52 AM ET

Maine labor officials say the state's jobless rate was 6.9 percent for the month, down from 7.1 percent in March and 7.3 percent a year ago.

Maine's unemployment rate in April dipped below 7 percent, the first time that's happened since December 2008.

Maine labor officials say the state's jobless rate was 6.9 percent for the month, down from 7.1 percent in March and 7.3 percent a year ago.

Officials say 48,600 Mainers were unemployed in April, a drop of 3,100 over the year. Maine's unemployment rate is significantly below the national rate of 7.5 percent, and slightly above the 6.8 percent rate for the New England region.

Among New England states, Vermont had the lowest rate of 4.0 percent, while Rhode Island had the highest, 8.8 percent. For other states in the region, unemployment rates were 5.5 percent in New Hampshire, 6.4 percent in Massachusetts and 8.0 percent in Connecticut.
