06/14/2013 11:47 AM ET

Maine State Police say David LeClair, 23, was riding with a group of friends on Route 2 in Hanover when he was struck by a tractor trailer at about 8:45 a.m.

A man killed this morning while bicycling in the annual 180-mile Trek Across Maine event has been identified as David LeClair, 23, of Watertown, Mass.

Maine State Police say LeClair was riding with a group of friends on Route 2 in Hanover when he was struck by a tractor trailer at about 8:45 a.m. a few miles from the starting point.

Authorities say LeClair was hit by the rear of the truck and killed instantly. The truck did not stop, but police pulled over a vehicle matching the description in Rumford a short time later.

State Public Safety Department officials say troopers investigating the accident are interviewing the truck driver and examining the vehicle.

More than 2,000 bicyclists left Sunday River ski resort today to start the three-day Trek Across Maiane event that ends Sunday in Belfast. The ride is a fundraiser for the American Lung Association.

Last year's event raised $1.8 million.
