Rep. Chellie Pingree says Army Sgt. Corey Garver, 26, died after he was injured in an IED explosion while on patrol.

A soldier from Topsham has died in Afghanistan. Maine U.S. 1st District Rep. Chellie Pingree says Army Sgt. Corey Garver, 26, died of injuries suffered when an IED exploded near his patrol in Paktiya Province.

Pingree says Garver (in photo, right) was assigned to B Company 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

"Sergeant Garver died defending his country and we owe him and his family a debt of gratitude for their sacrifice," Pingree says in a statement. "I know words can't ease the pain that his family is feeling, but I hope they know that the thoughts and prayers of the people of Maine go out to them during this most difficult time."

Pingree says Garver's mother lives in Louisiana and his father and stepmother live in New Mexico.
