Prison officials are declining to provide details of the death of Alan Powell, 57, but state police says Powell was attacked.

WARREN, Maine (AP) _ A Maine State Prison inmate serving a life sentence for the murder of a 65-year-old woman has died after being attacked by another inmate.

The Department of Corrections says 57-year-old Alan Powell died at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Spokesman Scott Fish declined to provide details of Powell's death, but state police say he was attacked.

Maine State Police and the medical examiner are reviewing his death. No charges have been filed.

Powell was convicted of sexually assaulting, stabbing and strangling Martha Daigle of Waterville, the mother of 17 grown children, in her Waterville apartment in 1989. Her body was found by her 12-year-old grandson.

At sentencing in 1991, the judge said Powell had shown anger toward society and would pose a deadly threat if set free.
