LEWISTON, Maine (AP) _ A Maine lawyer is recovering from a polar bear attack while on a camping trip in Canada.

The wife of Matt Dyer says he was camping with a group in the Torngat National Park on the northern tip of Newfoundland.

Jeanne Wells of Turner tells the Lewiston Sun-Journal the attack happened overnight Tuesday while the group slept.

Wells said she was in Maine when the attack occurred. She learned of the attack Wednesday afternoon and flew to Montreal.

Dyer was flown from the park to a Montreal trauma center and then taken to Montreal General Hospital.

The park is home to seal-hunting polar bears, caribou and remnant glaciers.

Dyer works for Pine Tree Legal Assistance.
