Collins Presses for Funding for Destroyer for BIW
07/30/2013 03:52 PM ET

The shipyard was awarded a contract to build four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, and Sen. Susan Collins is trying to procure funding for a fifth.

BATH, Maine (AP) _ U.S. Sen. Susan Collins is working to fund an extra destroyer for Maine's Bath Iron Works.

The shipyard last month was awarded a $2.8 billion contract to build four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, with an option for a fifth. If the fifth ship is built, it would bring the total value to $3.5 billion.

A Senate defense appropriations subcommittee bill calls for $100 million for the fifth ship. It also includes language authored by Collins to fund another $200 million in fiscal 2015, allowing the Navy to exercise its contract on the ship.

Mississippi-based Huntington Ingalls is building another five destroyers under the original plan. Collins said sequestration hampered full funding for all 10 ships, but that all the ships are needed.
