Wayne Officials Issue Rabies Warning
08/16/2013 10:09 AM ET

Town Manager Aaron Chrostowsky says a skunk that was acting aggressively toward campers at Beaver Brook Campground turned out to have rabies.

WAYNE, Maine (AP) _ Wayne officials are urging area residents to use caution around wild animals after a rabid skunk was found at a campground.

Town Manager Aaron Chrostowsky said in a statement that the animal was acting aggressively toward campers at Beaver Brook Campground.

The Kennebec Journal reports it was taken from the campground Saturday and later confirmed to have rabies.

Chrostowsky urged residents in the area of the campground, on Androscoggin Lake near the Leeds and North Monmouth town boundaries, to avoid contact with wild animals and make sure pets are vaccinated against rabies.

He says anyone he sees wild or domestic animals acting strangely should call animal control.
