Forbes Ranks Maine Last for Business Climate Once Again
09/27/2013 4:40 PM ET

Forbes magazine has ranked Maine the worst state for business for the fourth year in a row.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The magazine released its "Best States for Business" list on Friday. Forbes cited Maine's high corporate tax burden and poor job and economic growth forecast.

In a statement, Republican Gov. Paul LePage blamed Democrats for rejecting legislation that would lower taxes and energy costs to improve the business climate. He said that "after four decades of liberal rule ... it's no wonder that Forbes would put our state at the bottom of the list."

But Democratic Senate President Justin Alfond of Portland counters that Maine is lagging the rest of the country because LePage has done little to grow the economy and bring jobs to the state.
